Convert color palettes between formats
Have an Adobe Swatch Exchange (ASE) palette you need in GIMP, or a GIMP palette (GPL) you want to use elsewhere?
Convert ASE and GPL files directly in your browser, free, without uploading anything. Or use Suisai for more extensive conversions between palette files, stylesheets, code, and images.
Suisai opens ASE, ACO, GPL, and CLR palette files and supports thirteen whole-palette export formats, preserving color names wherever the formats allow.
Convert ASE and GPL files for free
Choose an ASE or GPL palette, or drag it into the converter. The tool automatically identifies the file format and converts it to the other, preserving the swatch colors and names supported by both formats.
Everything happens locally in your browser. Your palette isn't uploaded, stored, or sent to a server.
You can even disconnect from the internet after loading the page and the converter will continue to work. Its source code is available under the MIT license, so you can inspect how your files are handled.
Open existing palettes. Export wherever you need them.
Suisai opens four common palette file formats directly:
- ASE — Adobe Swatch Exchange: used by Adobe applications and supported by other design tools.
- ACO — Photoshop Swatches: open and edit existing Photoshop swatch collections.
- GPL — GIMP Palette: used by GIMP and supported by applications such as Inkscape.
- CLR — macOS Color List: the native format used by the macOS system color picker.
ASE, GPL, and CLR palettes can be edited and saved back in their original formats. ACO palettes can also be opened and edited, but changes must be saved as ASE, GPL, or CLR.
For use elsewhere, Export supports thirteen formats:
| Group | Formats |
|---|---|
| Palette files | ASE, GPL, CLR |
| Stylesheets | CSS, SCSS, Sass, Less |
| Code and structured data | JSON, XML, HTML, Markdown, SVG |
| Images | PNG |
Convert a palette from one application into a format another understands, export its named colors into a stylesheet, or produce a palette image for sharing.
Keep the names you've already given your colors
A palette is more useful when its swatches have meaningful names. Suisai preserves existing color names when opening and editing supported palette files, and carries those names into exports wherever the destination format supports them.
For unnamed colors, Suisai can suggest names from a collection of 31,914 named shades, matched using OKLab. You can replace those suggestions with your own names at any time.
When exporting code or stylesheets, Suisai converts color names into usable identifiers and handles duplicates, helping keep your output organized and consistent.
Edit the original or export a new copy
Opening a palette in Suisai doesn't require converting or moving it. ASE, GPL, and CLR files can be edited and saved back to their original locations, while Save As lets you choose a different location or supported palette format.
When you need a separate file for another application, use Export to generate it without changing your working palette. You can also drag a complete palette from its window into Finder or another destination, using your last-used export settings.
For larger collections, Suisai's Palette Library can index your existing folders without importing them into a proprietary database. Your files stay where you choose, while their colors become searchable and reusable across projects.
